UnCollege Interview with Dale Stephens

The UnCollege movement started by Dale Stephens has created quite a stir lately. The movement encourages students to consider self-education rather than formal higher education. I had the privilege to ask Dale a few questions about the organization, as well as some of his advice for students considering seeking a college degree.

30 Hour Famine

I was turned on to a really neat initiative this past Sunday called 30 Hour Famine. It’s an event that’s being promoted by World Vision, and its goal is to try and make a dent in the world hunger epidemic. It’s aimed at youth and challenges them to go hungry for 30 hours while working to raise as much money as they can to donate towards this cause. Our church youth group is getting involved, and I wanted to share it here in case some of you may wan to mention this to your church leaders. Check out the promo video below.

A Few Random Thoughts on College

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my college experience, since I’m nearing the end of it. After working with and following the UnCollege movement for a while, it made me begin to wonder if college really was worth the money, time, and sacrifice that everyone thinks.

In my case, I think college was probably the right choice at the time. If I were graduating high school today, I’m not so sure I would make the same choice. While I’ve learned a lot, I feel like much of what I’ve learned has been due to my own desire and experiences I’ve created because of that desire. There are several job opportunities I haven’t been able to pursue since I’m still in college, that I think may have worked out if I were able to work full time.

The higher education system in the US doesn’t seem relevant to the types of jobs and markets that are the fastest growing. Our economy now seems to be encouraging the “start-up,” entrepreneurial type of business. With that in mind, I’m sure that what I, and many other graduates are going to find is that what we learned in college is going to be quickly outdated and no longer useful.

These are just a few of my random, hastily thrown together thoughts on college and higher education in general.
